"NILINDE NIJIJENGE" -- Empower me to sustain myself

St. Martin’s School, a beacon of hope in Nairobi’s Kibagare slum, was founded by the Assumption Sisters of Nairobi in 1980. Nestled within a community of 45,000 people, Kibagare is home to 17,000 households, many of which are made from wooden frames and iron sheets.
At St. Martin’s, we don’t just educate—we transform lives. Every day, we provide 900 children with a quality education, but our reach extends far beyond the classroom. We actively support the entire community through initiatives like Computer Learning, Student Sponsorship, and Forward Education Programs.

Our mission doesn’t stop there. We have launched key projects that create lasting change—combating HIV, teaching life skills, and addressing period poverty. Together, we’re building a future where every child and family can thrive.

Community Household Evaluations: Building Sustainable Solutions

Since 2018, our community team has been conducting ongoing household evaluations, assessing over 300 homes to date. This program identifies the most vulnerable households and aligns them with the right support, helping families transition from survival to sustainable living. By the end of 2024, we aim to evaluate 600 households, providing a solid foundation for targeted, long-term solutions.

Key Challenges Identified:

70% face food insecurity.
80% own only basic assets.
80% rely on unstable income sources.
Many struggle with low confidence and lack access to social networks.
Poor health and sanitation affect large portions of the community.
Youth at risk of falling into drugs and negative influences.

This evaluation process is the cornerstone of our sustainable projects, driving change for the entire community.

Cooperative Groups: Empowering the Community, One Home at a Time

Since 2018, we have worked alongside the Kibagare community to establish cooperative groups as part of our sustainable development efforts. Today, we have 19 groups with 234 members, organized into key categories to address specific challenges and uplift vulnerable populations.

Caregivers

With 9 groups and 144 members, caregivers unite to improve their economic situation, increasing their income to better support their families.

Substance Abuse Recovery

We have 2 groups with 28 members, all recovering from drug and substance abuse. Together, they support each other’s recovery while building sustainable businesses to generate regular income.

People Living with HIV

This group of 26 members focuses on breaking the stigma of HIV through support and counseling. Members collaborate on crafting beadwork, jewelry, and bags for local markets, while many also run their own small businesses.

Young Mothers

Recently, we established a new group for single mothers, one of the most vulnerable groups in Kibagare. By providing education, support, and business tools, we are helping them build brighter futures for themselves and their children.
